Ways To Dress Up Your Design

An important element of most remodels is replacing the dated countertops with new ones. Keep reading to learn more about what you can add to your countertops order to help dress up your kitchen or bathroom design!

Believe it or not, it’s the small details that can sometimes make the biggest impact and completely change the feel of your space. Here are some of the following things you may want to ponder adding to your order:

  1. Decorative Edgework - Ogee, Double Ogee, Mitered, Laminated, etc.

  2. Cabinetry Bumpouts

  3. Decorative Countertop Corners & Oversized Radiuses

  4. Full Height Backsplash

  5. Backsplash Niches or Shelving

  6. Decoratively Shaped Backsplash

  7. Cabinet Corbels or Legs

  8. Unique Sinks

Decorative Edgework

Decorative edges add more to a room than you’d think! If you prefer a modern look, a traditional eased (straight) edge or mitered edge may be right for you. But if you’re someone who wants it to feel a bit more dressy, consider doing a double ogee edge, or a laminated ogee for an even more dramatic appearance!

Cabinetry Bumpouts

Bumpouts refer to when one or more of your base cabinets is a bit further forward into the room than the rest of the cabinets. Naturally, your countertops will follow this same shape, which gives your kitchen or bathroom a more custom feel. These certainly make a space feel more custom and higher-end, and offer a unique design detail you don’t see in most kitchens/baths.

Countertop Corners & Oversized Radiuses

When designing your kitchen/bathroom/bar etc., you can request that your cabinetmaker add decorative posts or corners that will receive a uniquely-shaped countertop. This can also be done on a square island as well, but looks more intentional when the shape follows the outline of the cabinetry.

Another option is to add some curvature to your space. This can be achieved by creating a radius on your island or peninsula seating area. You can do as big or as subtle a radius as you’d like. Large radiuses were more commonly done in the earlier 2000’s, however cabinets are now being built with rounded ends, which can look neat when the countertops follows shape.

Full Height Backsplash

Take your countertops a step further and use the same slab for your backsplash... This is a timeless look that can add a subtle or dramatic touch to your application depending on the color you use. Quiet patterns look great and give any room a luxury-feel. Kick it up a notch and use a bold stone with veining and striations. This will turn your backsplash into art you’ll never get tired of looking at!

Backsplash Additions

SHELVING - NICHES - DECORATIVE SHAPES

Take your backsplashes to the next level and add a recessed niche or floating shelf near your stove to hold your favorite herbs, spices, and oils! This will give your space a more custom-feel and make it more useable. If you are having full height backsplash installed as a part of your remodel or build, you can also create custom shapes on the back or sides. Uniquely-shaped backsplashes can easily make a room feel luxurious and high-end!

Cabinet Corbels & Legs

If you’re planning to put chairs or barstools under your countertops, you will likely have a somewhat large overhang to sit underneath. When the countertop is suspended and floating, a type of support will usually be required. Some people prefer an unseen support, but another option is to use a more visible and decorative leg or corbel. Corbels get screwed into the upper side of your cabinets, allowing the countertops to sit right on top of it; distributing the heaviness of the stone. Wooden legs are another common option.

Unique Sinks

Whatever room you’re remodeling whether it be a kitchen, bathroom, or bar, will likely need a new sink or two… Trade the common stainless or white sink for one with some extra personality! You have so many options when it comes to sinks… Hammered metal, gold plated, florals, stone carved, etc.

In design… The most memorable spaces are ones where the homeowner or designer wasn’t afraid to do something a little bit bold! While it’s not recommend choosing too many out-there items or fixtures for a single space, one or two unique pops can make your kitchen or bathroom stand out from the rest!
